The history of the Foiano community is linked to the reclamation of the Val di Chiana, commissioned by the Grand Duke of Tuscany Pietro Leopoldo I di Lorena (1778) who transformed the unhealthy swamp into a very fertile territory, which over time was called the Granaio della Toscana (great barn of Tuscany), through a majestic engineering work entrusted to the Arezzo engineer Vittorio Fossombroni.
